This week in 60 for 60, we are writing 60 word ficlets about the Arthur Conan Doyle canon story, The Adventure of Black Peter. When a notoriously dangerous whaler is murdered violently at his home, there's no obvious villain to be found, even if everyone who knew him wanted him gone. The young inspector on the case knows there can be only one man to consult.

If you've never joined us, we'd love to have you! You can learn more here (including the schedule), but the basics are easy: read the story, then write a 60 word ficlet inspired by it. That's it! It's fun, it's quick and you'll love reading both the wonderful classic canon and the terrific variety of fic we all come up with. Come have fun with us! My own entry for the week is below. As always, just let me know you've written a story, and I'll add a link. Thanks, everyone!

60 for 60: Week 3: Black Peter

Now, with his sleeves rolled up his arms, Holmes got to work. The first two wounds were somewhat shallow and tentative as he made his considerations. Anatomy, physics. Force. Mass times... acceleration. For the third blow, he reared back, and with all of his might plunged the harpoon as deeply into the dead body dangling before him as he could.

Next week on 60 for 60: from The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, The Blanched Soldier. One of the rare stories narrated by Holmes himself! A pair of soldiers are as close as friends can be until one of them is injured -- then disappears during his convalescence. His friend embarks on a dedicated quest to find him, wherever he is now and whatever it takes.

Excellent! That image, of him attempting to harpoon a pig, is pretty awesome.

My one is here.

Thanks! It was an image that really lodged itself in my head. So violent and crazy-seeming, but absolutely integral to the case. Glad you liked it!

Oh, brilliant! I love the way you focused on that pig-spearing sequence. It is so very Holmes. Great job!

I love writing (and reading!) Holmes' thought process. A genius detective has to have an interesting system of thinking through problems. I'm very happy you liked it!

Oh, that's very kind of you! And yeah, I liked putting in a bit of ambiguity about Holmes' drug use too. Thanks so much for reading!
