This week in 60 for 60, we are writing 60 word ficlets about the Arthur Conan Doyle canon story, The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier. Two men of the Army are the most dedicated companions until they are separated by injury... and a subsequent mysterious disappearance. His friend is determined to find him again, no matter what the cost.

If you've never joined us, we'd love to have you! You can learn more here (including the schedule), but the basics are easy: read the story, then write a 60 word ficlet inspired by it. That's it! It's fun, it's quick and you'll love reading both the wonderful classic canon and the terrific variety of fic we all come up with. Come have fun with us! My own entry for the week is below. As always, just let me know you've written a story, and I'll add a link. Thanks, everyone!

60 for 60: Week 4: The Blanched Soldier

Old Ralph told Godfrey about the visitor, but he had to see for himself.
No. It can’t be.
Godfrey crept to the window for a better look.
J-James? Oh, God, it is.
His head fell against the glass at the sight. James, for the first time in years. Strong, brave, beautiful James.
But that was before, Godfrey. That was before.

Author's note: Yeah, I shipped it. ;)

Next week on 60 for 60: from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Blue Carbuncle. A classic holiday story! Cases come in all shapes and sizes, but few are as unusual as this one, arriving at Holmes' door as a haggard hat and a Christmas goose. Where these odd clues lead amazes even the Great Detective.

P.S. -- I'll have a wrapup for last week, Black Peter, tomorrow evening. Sorry for the delay.

Okay, I'm done! here. Failed at 60 words, though - it's the full 100. Next week I shall try harder to be concise.

(And, yes, I shipped it too. Oh, those boys with their Deep Bonds.)

Thanks for writing, even if it is a bit long this week! And yeah, you had to ship it, if only because the rest of the story is so strange and dull. But even the ship is weird, because James loves Godfrey, is desperately worried about him, has to discover what happened to him. But first, he's going to wait three years. WTF?

I love it! And yes, Godfrey and James, the way James tells his story and speakds of Godfrey, the utter determination to find him again, whatever the cost...probably the best thing about BLAN, hands-down. Brava!

Probably the *only* thing in BLAN, since BLAN is perhaps the worst of all the canon! It's kind of a mess. There's a good reason why so many of our group spent their 60 words retconning the thing. :) Glad you liked my bit, though!

It is a frustrating story on its own. I think our group has done it far more justice than could have ever been anticipated. :-)
